Volvo calls its keys the standard key, the Key Tag and the Care Key on recent models, the remote control key on earlier models, and the key card, the key tag and the digital key on its electric models. Which key a car uses, and whether the Volvo model and year is supported, is confirmed on the call.
Matt is with you within the hour in Leicester, and the same day across Leicestershire. The phone is answered 24 hours a day, every day of the year, and a quote is agreed before work begins.
Six kinds of Volvo key work are carried out at the car, and each one is a service with a page of its own.
The list states what is done. Support for a given Volvo is confirmed on the call, from the registration.
Six situations are covered in the Volvo owner manuals, and each has a first step that Volvo gives the driver before anyone is called.
| What the Volvo shows or does | What the Volvo manual says first | What to tell Matt |
|---|---|---|
| Car key not found on the driver display, on models with the standard key | Volvo describes an error reading the key during starting. Place the key on the key symbol in the storage compartment of the centre console and start again. | Whether the Volvo started from the key symbol, and how many keys are still held. |
| Insert car key, on earlier models with an ignition switch | Remove the remote control key from the ignition switch, press it in again and make a new start attempt. | Whether the same message appears with the second key. |
| Immobiliser Try to start again, on earlier models | Volvo describes an error in the immobiliser system during starting. Where the error persists the manual sends the owner to a workshop. | The exact wording on the display and whether a second key behaves the same way. |
| Buttons and door handles give no response, on models with the standard key | Volvo names electromagnetic fields and screening as causes. Unlock with the detachable key blade, then place the key in the reader in the storage compartment of the tunnel console to disarm the alarm and start the car. | Whether the key blade opened the door and whether the Volvo then started. |
| A key is shut inside the locked Volvo | On models with the standard key, a key locked in the car is temporarily deactivated until the car is unlocked with another valid key. | Whether a second key is within reach and where the Volvo stands. |
| An electric Volvo gives no response to a key | The EX30 and EX90 manuals state that a car switched off for a long time takes time to recognise the key, and that a car with completely flat batteries responds to no key. | How long the Volvo has stood, because a flat car battery is not a key fault. |
The messages and the first steps differ by Volvo model and year, and the owner manual of the car is the reference. A message that stays after the first step is the point to call 0116 442 2084.
A Volvo key replaced and programmed at the car in Leicester.
Call Matt on 0116 442 2084Volvo names its keys in the owner manuals. On recent models the manual lists the standard key, the Key Tag and the Care Key. The standard key and the Care Key carry buttons. The Key Tag is a smaller key without buttons, sold as an accessory for cars equipped with keyless locking and unlocking, and the Care Key lets the owner set a speed limit for the car when that key is used.
The standard key holds a detachable key blade in metal, and the Key Tag holds none. Earlier manuals use the name remote control key, in a basic version, a version without PCC and a version with PCC, and call the keyless system Keyless Drive. The manuals for the electric EX30 and EX90 list three key types, the digital key, the key card and the key tag.
The digital key runs on a compatible phone or smart watch. It is managed through the supported Volvo digital key setup, not cut or programmed as a physical key. Inta-Lock works on the physical key, the locks and the immobiliser.
Volvo describes the electronic immobiliser as a theft protection system that prevents starting the car without the correct key, and its manuals speak of keys programmed to one single car. Advanced Diagnostics, Abrites, Autel, Xhorse and SPVG are used for automotive key programming and diagnostics. How a Volvo key is coded to a vehicle is set out under car key programming, and support for a given Volvo is confirmed on the call.
Five steps take a Volvo key job from the first call to a key that is tested at the car.
A quote is agreed before work begins.
Volvo manuals describe different keys by family and by age. The manuals read for the XC40 and the S90 describe the standard key with buttons, the manual for the V40 describes the remote control key, and the manuals for the electric EX30 and EX90 describe the digital key, the key card and the key tag.
The Volvo UK site shows the EX30, the EX60, the EX90, the XC40, the XC60 and the XC90 among its current cars. No list of supported Volvo models is kept on this page, because the range changes and a registration does not.
Give Matt the registration at the start of the call. It identifies the model and the model year, and support for the Volvo key work is confirmed before attendance.

The Volvo key call and the Volvo key job are handled by one person, Matt East, the owner of Inta-Lock. He trained as a locksmith in 2011 and moved into automotive key cutting and programming, with the equipment for it, in 2019.
Local garages and main dealers have referred key work to him since 2021. More than 1,000 jobs stand behind the work carried out on a Volvo key today.

A Volvo key is made at the address where the car is parked, on a drive, outside a workplace or in a car park, in Leicester and in the towns and villages of Leicestershire. Matt is with you within the hour in Leicester, and the same day across Leicestershire.
Four Volvo key situations sit beside the main work, each with a service that owns the method, and four neighbouring makes have key pages.
Volvo states in its owner manual that when a remote control key is lost, the code of the missing key is erased from the system as a theft prevention measure, and that the remaining keys are brought along. The same step belongs to the lost car keys service, where missing electronic keys are removed from the immobiliser memory where the vehicle supports it.
A mechanical blade still turns a physical lock unless that lock is changed or rekeyed. A Volvo with no working key is dealt with at the car on supported models.
Car key not found, Insert car key and Immobiliser Try to start again are the messages the Volvo manuals tie to the electronic immobiliser. Where the first step in the manual does not clear the message, the fault is traced under immobiliser diagnostics, and a key is made only where the diagnosis points to the key.
Volvo key fob faults are handled under the car key fob repair service. Whether the remote is repaired or takes another route is confirmed after the fault is identified.
Volvo states that the battery of the Key Tag accessory is not replaceable, while the key tag of the electric EX30 takes a replaceable battery, so name the key that is held.
Where a Volvo has keyless locking and unlocking, the key is the target of a relay attack, the method thieves use against keyless entry systems. A signal blocking pouch for each key, the spare included, is the first step. Whether a Volvo key carries a motion sensor is a question for the Volvo dealer.
Inta-Lock fits the Autowatch Ghost 2 immobiliser, an added layer that sits apart from the key of the car.
Mercedes, BMW, Audi, and Jaguar and Land Rover are the makes a Volvo owner often weighs alongside a Volvo, and each has a key page of its own on this site.
Car key not found is the driver display message that Volvo ties to the electronic immobiliser, and it reports an error reading the key during starting.
On models with the standard key the manual says to place the key on the key symbol in the storage compartment of the centre console and start again. A message that stays after that is diagnosed at the car.
The Volvo manual for the S90 states that a total of twelve keys are programmed and used for one single car, and the manual for the earlier V40 gives up to six.
The number for a given Volvo follows the model and the year. The V40 manual adds that the car is supplied with two remote control keys.
No, a Volvo Key Tag has no detachable key blade, so nothing is cut and the Key Tag is programmed to the car.
Volvo sells the Key Tag as an accessory for cars equipped with keyless locking and unlocking. Whether a Key Tag is supplied for a given Volvo is confirmed on the call.
A Care Key is a Volvo key with buttons that lets the owner set a limit for the speed of the car when that particular key is used.
Volvo links the Care Key to a driver profile that is more restricted. Say on the call whether the key held is a Care Key or a standard key.
No, a Volvo digital key is managed through the supported Volvo digital key setup on a compatible phone or smart watch, not cut or programmed as a physical key.
Inta-Lock works on the physical key, the locks and the immobiliser. The EX90 manual advises keeping a key card to hand in case the device with the digital key is lost.
Yes, Volvo states that the code of a missing key is erased from the system as a theft prevention measure, and missing electronic keys are removed from the immobiliser memory where the vehicle supports it.
A mechanical blade still turns a physical lock unless that lock is changed or rekeyed.
Supported Volvo key work is carried out where the car stands in Leicester, on a drive, at a workplace or in a car park.
Matt confirms on the call whether the Volvo model and year is supported before he sets off.
The price of a Volvo key is quoted for the individual car, and a quote is agreed before work begins.
It follows the model, the year, the key the car uses and the number of working keys still held, so no price list is published.
Call Matt with the Volvo registration and the name of the key, and support for the car is confirmed before he sets off.
