How a car key works

Why a Postal Key Depends on the Model

Three parts of a modern car key each have to match one vehicle, which is why a key by post is confirmed model by model.

The blade. The metal blade is cut to the lock of the vehicle. A blade that is not cut to that lock turns nothing.
The transponder chip. The immobiliser lets the engine start only for a chip it recognises. A chip that is not coded to the vehicle leaves the engine dead.
The remote or proximity function. The buttons, or the keyless function, lock and unlock the vehicle. This function is matched to the vehicle as well.

On a number of key systems the coding of the chip takes place with programming equipment connected to the car. That step does not travel in an envelope, so the postal route exists only where the key system of the model allows it.
