Matt East attends every job in person. A replacement car key is a new key made for the vehicle itself, cut to the lock and coded to the immobiliser, for a key that is lost, stolen, broken or worn out.

Matt is with you within the hour in Leicester, and the same day across Leicestershire. A quote is agreed before work begins.

Made at your vehicleThe van carries the cutting and programming equipment, so the car stays where it stands.

What is involved

A Replacement Car Key Is Two Jobs

A replacement car key is two jobs carried out in one visit, the cutting of the blade and the coding of the electronics. A key that has only had the first job done opens the door and leaves the engine dead.

  • Cutting the blade. The blade is cut to the lock of the vehicle on equipment carried in the van. Where no key survives to measure, the key data is obtained from the vehicle identification details, or the lock is decoded where that is required.
  • Coding the electronics. The transponder chip is programmed to the immobiliser so the car accepts the key as its own. Where the key carries a remote or a proximity function, that is paired to the vehicle as a separate step.

The replacement key is tested for the lock, start and remote functions it is supplied to operate, with you present, before Matt leaves.

When a Replacement Is the Right Service

A replacement is the right service when the key itself is gone or beyond use, and the wrong one when a repair solves the fault. Seven situations decide it.

What has happenedRight serviceWhy
Every key is lost or stolenReplacement, booked as lost car keysNo key survives, so the key is made from the vehicle and the missing electronic keys are removed from the immobiliser memory where the vehicle supports it
The blade has snappedReplacement, after extractionThe broken piece is removed from the lock first, then a new key is cut and coded
The cuts have worn smoothReplacementA copy of a worn blade copies the wear, so the new blade is cut to the lock instead
The transponder chip has failedReplacement or recodingThe chip is tested first. A chip that still answers is recoded, and a dead one means a new key
The case or the buttons have failedRepairThe chip and the blade are sound, so a new case or switch restores the key
The fob battery is flatRepairA new battery restores the remote, and the key itself was never at fault
One key works and a second is wantedSpareA spare is made alongside the working key, which is a shorter job than a replacement

The last three situations belong to the repair and spare key routes, where the parts of the existing key remain usable. Each is checked at the vehicle before a replacement is quoted.

The big difference

Replacement With a Working Key or Without

The same replacement car key is a different job depending on whether a working key survives.

With one working key present, the new key is cut and coded alongside it and nothing is removed from the immobiliser. The visit is the shorter of the two.

With every key gone, the job starts from the vehicle rather than from a key. The key data is obtained from the vehicle identification details, or the lock is decoded where that is required, and the new key is coded to the immobiliser. Where the vehicle supports it, the missing electronic keys are removed from the immobiliser memory, so they no longer start the engine. A mechanical blade still turns a physical lock unless that lock is changed or rekeyed.

That second situation has its own page, because the checks, the security steps and the urgency differ, and it is set out in full under lost car keys in Leicester.

How it works

How a Replacement Key Visit Runs in Leicester

Five steps cover the visit, from the call to the tested car key.

  1. Call Matt on 0116 442 2084 with the make, model, year and registration. A quote is agreed before work begins.
  2. Matt arrives at the vehicle, at home, at work or at the roadside, and checks identity and authority for the work.
  3. The blade is cut on equipment carried in the van, to the lock of the vehicle rather than to a worn copy.
  4. The transponder is coded to the immobiliser, and the remote or proximity function is paired where the key has one.
  5. The new key is tested for the lock, start and remote functions it is supplied to operate, with you present.
Key types and makes

Key Types Replaced at the Vehicle in Leicester

Four broad key types cover the main systems Matt works with, and the type decides how much of a replacement car key job is cutting and how much is coding.

  • Plain mechanical key. A cut blade with no electronics. The whole job is the cutting.
  • Transponder key. A blade with a chip in the head. The blade is cut and the chip is coded to the immobiliser.
  • Remote and flip key. A blade, a chip and a remote in one fob. The remote is paired after the chip is coded.
  • Smart or proximity key. A fob the car detects without a blade being turned. The coding is the larger part of the job, and manufacturer level access forms part of it on supported current models.

Checks Made Before a Key Is Cut

A replacement car key is a way into the vehicle, so identity and authority to request the work are checked before a single key is cut.

The documents depend on the vehicle and the situation. The V5C vehicle registration certificate, which names the registered keeper, and photo identification are common examples, and what applies to your own vehicle is confirmed on the call.

Inta-Lock holds SERMI accreditation, which authorises access to security related manufacturer information where supported vehicle work requires it. The scheme documentation is published by the SERMI scheme owner.

What it costs

What Moves the Price of a Replacement Key

Four things move the price of a replacement car key, and a quote for your own vehicle is agreed before work begins.

  1. The key type. A plain mechanical key is cut and carries no electronics. A transponder, remote or smart key is cut and coded, and the coding work differs from one key type to the next.
  2. The make and the model year. Two cars of the same age take different amounts of work, depending on how the manufacturer protects the immobiliser.
  3. Whether a working key survives. A key made alongside a working one is the shorter job. A key made with every key gone adds steps at both ends.
  4. The security procedure the vehicle requires. Some vehicles are coded through the diagnostic port alone, and others require a manufacturer security data request first.

No price list is published, because a figure that fits one vehicle misleads the owner of another. The quote on the call is for the car on your driveway.

Replacement Car Keys Compared With the Alternatives

Four other routes produce something that looks like the same key, and each one suits a different situation.

A Replacement Compared With a Key Repair

Comparison. Both end with a working key and both happen at the vehicle.

Differences. A repair keeps the key you own and fixes the part that failed, usually a battery, a case or a button. A replacement produces a new key for the car.

Similarities. Both start with the same test of the chip, the blade and the remote, and both are quoted before work begins.

Effects. A repair is the smaller job whenever the chip and the blade are sound, and what is repairable inside a fob is set out on the key fob repair service page.

A Replacement Compared With a Spare Key

Comparison. Both end with a working key cut and coded to the vehicle.

Differences. A spare is made while an original still works, so it is cut and coded in a shorter visit with nothing removed from the immobiliser. A replacement is made when the original is gone or beyond use.

Similarities. Both keys are cut on the same equipment and coded through the same immobiliser, and both are tested with you present.

Effects. The same finished key is a smaller job as a spare than as a replacement, which is the whole argument for ordering a spare car key before anything goes wrong.

A Replacement Compared With a Blade Only Copy

Comparison. Both produce a blade that fits the lock, and from a photograph the two look alike.

Differences. A blade only copy reproduces the shape of a key that is handed over. A replacement is cut to the lock of the vehicle and then coded to the immobiliser.

Similarities. On an older car with no immobiliser, the two do the same job.

Effects. On a car with an immobiliser, a blade with no coding opens the door and leaves the engine dead. The coding stage is a service in its own right, set out under car key programming.

A Mobile Locksmith Compared With a Main Dealer

Comparison. Both supply a car key coded to the vehicle, so the finished key does the same job.

Differences. The locksmith works at the vehicle, where the supported job is completed on site. A dealer works at the dealership, to its own ordering and appointment process.

Similarities. Both check identity and authority before a key is cut, and both programme the key through the vehicle security system rather than copying an existing one.

Effects. Recovery of the vehicle is avoided when the key is made where the car stands, whether that is a driveway or a street in Leicester city centre.

Common questions

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a replacement car key take?

The time depends on the key type and the security procedure the vehicle requires.

A key that is cut only is one job, and a key that is cut and coded is two. The time for your own car is said on the phone before Matt sets off.

What checks are made before a replacement key is cut?

Identity and authority to request the work are checked before a key is cut.

The documents depend on the vehicle and the situation. The V5C vehicle registration certificate and photo identification are common examples, and what applies to your own vehicle is confirmed on the call.

What happens to the old key after a replacement?

Where the vehicle supports it, a missing electronic key is removed from the immobiliser memory, so it no longer starts the engine.

A mechanical blade still turns a physical lock unless that lock is changed or rekeyed. A key that is only worn or broken stays with you.

Does a replacement key work like the existing key?

The replacement key is tested for the lock, start and remote functions it is supplied to operate, with you present.

It is coded through the vehicle security system rather than copied from another key.

Can a replacement key be made without the original?

Yes. The vehicle identification details are used to obtain the required key data, or the lock is decoded where that is required, and the key is then cut and programmed at the car.

Identity and authority are checked first, the same as on any replacement.

Do you replace van keys as well as car keys?

Yes. Van keys are cut and programmed at the roadside or the yard, including vans with a separate load area lock.

A van is quoted as a van, because the load area lock is a separate part of the job.

Is same day attendance available for a replacement key?

Matt is with you within the hour in Leicester, and the same day across Leicestershire.

Whether the key for your own vehicle is carried in the van is confirmed on the phone when the job is discussed.

A replacement car key in Leicester starts with a call to Matt.
